The duo harboured an appreciation for “Mother Nature” and an interest in finding safe, effective beauty products that could create “a more sustainable future for the beauty industry.”

The Ottawa-based hairstylist and nail technician took their combined expertise in the industry, along with their shared interests, and created Fika Beauty, a company that offers products ranging from body wash to an all-in-one oil. We caught up with Giang and Lam to learn more.

Q. For those who aren’t familiar, what is Fika Beauty?

A. Fika, a Swedish word, means to slow down and enjoy the greater things in life with friends. This meaning is the essence of Fika Beauty. Our mission? To build a community of ambitious, creative, and supportive women in need of a little reminder: slow down, breathe, and take a moment for yourself. You are valued and we are here to help you carve out some very important time for self-care. Why? Because we are one of you. We are busy, working moms and young female entrepreneurs constantly trying to find that balance in our lives and now that we have our FikaFam, its getting a little easier.

Q. What makes it unique?

A. The relationship between us makes Fika Beauty unique. We are family, friends, roommates, and business partners. Our passion for the beauty industry, customer service, and eco-friendly focused practices have combined into a super machine of creativity and growth in a short amount of time. One of the most unique parts about Fika in an oversaturated industry is the simplicity behind our Fika collection. Simple, safe, eco-friendly, cruelty- free ingredients developed into effective and luxurious products that are easy to understand, easy to use, and easy to love. Each product launched is a simple way to a moment of self-care, because showing ourselves love should be just that — simple.

Q. Who is the target customer?

A. We started creating products out of a need for ourselves so our target customer are people just like us! Busy women with little time for self care but a need for balance and great skin. Someone who doesn’t buy the first product they see but takes the time to learn about the people behind the brand. They make an effort to find eco-conscious alternatives and love to support local Canadian brands.

Q. What can you share about where the products are made?

A. We currently hand make all of our products in-house at Fika Beauty in Ottawa, however we are excited to begin scaling our brand and will be working with a manufacturing facility in Ontario come 2022! Our product line is Leaping Bunny certified and our ingredients are ECOCERT certified, keeping sustainability and simple yet special formulations is the benchmark for all new products!

Q. Is there a ‘hero’ product in the line?

A. The product that launched our collection was our Fika All-In-One Glow Oil! The perfect collaboration for a hairstylist and nail technician, it is a lightweight oil made for sealing split ends, hydrating cuticles, and giving you an all over glow from head to toe. It also happens to smell incredible, with a top not of juicy red grapefruit.

Q. What is the price range for Fika Beauty products?

A. We have items as low as $5 for our pumice bar and range up to $95 for our FikaFam Starter Bundle, which includes four of our best-selling products.
