Vineeta Singh and Kaushik Mukherjee – SUGAR Cosmetics
SUGAR cosmetics is one of the leading cosmetics brands founded by Vineeta Singh and Kaushik Mukherjee in 2015 and the couple proves that if the couple has a good understanding they not just make a happy family but also become successful couplepreneurs. Vineeta Singh is the CEO of SUGAR Cosmetics, and Kaushik Mukherjee is the COO. The couple studied together at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, both interned at investment banks and ran their own startups. Vineeta graduated from IIT Madras in electrical engineering and pursued Business Studies at IIM Ahmedabad and featured on the cover of the WEEK at the age of 23, became India’s first and youngest B-school graduate to ditch a “Rs 1 crore” job offer from a leading investment bank and started her own HR company. Kaushik completed his MBA from IIM Ahmedabad and started his career at Oracle Corporation, Hyderabad as an application engineer from 2004-2006. As of 2022, Sugar Cosmetics boasts of a community of five million beauty enthusiasts across multiple platforms with a team of over 1500–75% of which are women. The brand has an omnichannel distribution network of over 10,000 retail outlets across 130 cities. Currently, the SUGAR cosmetics app has more than 1 million downloads and a big following on social media.
Vineeta Singh has become a household name and inspiration after her stint as one of the judges or “sharks” on Shark Tank India, the Indian adaptation of the global startup reality show.
Bipin Preet Singh and Upasana Taku – Mobikwik
Upasana Taku and Bipin Preet Singh started the company Mobikwik in 2009, a brand that provides a wide range of services including mobile phone-based payment systems, digital wallets. Upasana who is the director and Bipin who is the CEO of the company have been working together for 12 years. Finishing her schooling in Surat, Upasana Taku went on to the National Institute of Technology, Jalandhar for her B.Tech in Industrial Engineering, and, eventually, she did her MS in Management Science & Engineering from Stanford University, US. Bipin has been recognized many times as one of India’s leading Tech founders. Before founding Mobikwik, Bipin spent 7 years as a Platform Architect at companies such as Intel, Nvidia, and Freescale. He was featured in the 2016 ‘Fortune 40 under 40’ list of Indian entrepreneurs. He was also featured in the ‘Economic Times 40 under 40’ list of India’s top Business Leaders in 2018.
Anand Shahani and Mehak Sagar – WedMeGood
In 2008, Anand Shahani and Mehak Sagar met during an internship at GlaxoSmithKline, a health nutrition company, and fell in love with each other. Later, they got married in 2012. While planning their wedding the couple had to face various difficulties like discovering the right venue, vendors like band-baja and catering service then WedMeGood was born in February 2014. WedMeGood is a wedding portal that compiles a list of vendors from Photographers, Makeup Artists, Jewellery Brands, Decorators to help couples find the best professionals. While Anand is the CEO of WedMeGood, Mehak looks after content and digital marketing.
Anand studied at Xavier School of Management (XLRI), Jamshedpur and worked as marketing manager for Abbott Nutrition and Mehak post graduated from the Delhi School of Economics (DSE) and worked as a risk manager at American Express.
”We realised there was a lack of ‘wedding blogs’ in India that people could really trust and connect with. So we decided to marry the concept of a ‘wedding blog’ with a curated vendor listing that has been pre-screened and can help couples not only find the best wedding professionals for their style and budget but also give them ideas and experiences from other recently married couples,” Anand told Your Story.
“We stress on ‘modern’ because our content is tailor-made for today’s generation — one which understands the difference between candid and traditional studio photography, one which wants to do something unique and different, to take just a few examples,” adds Mehak.
Shubhra Chadda and Vivek Prabhakar – Chumbak
What would you say to a couple, who decided one day to sell their home to start a business selling brightly colored kitschy-chic products with a distinctly desi touch? That’s exactly what Shubhra Chadda and Vivek Prabhakar did and that’s how one of India’s best-known brands Chumbak was born. Shubhra Chadda and Vivek Prabhakar are the founders of the lifestyle brand ‘Chumbak’. Shubhra and Vivek got married in 2005 and founded Chumbak in 2009.
Chumbak is a lifestyle brand with a range of exquisite and unique home decor items and fashion accessories. Before their marriage, they bought a house only because they wanted to decorate it as they wished. Both Shubhra who is head of products at Chumbak and Prabhakar who is head of marketing of the company belong to the Defense family and they never got a chance to stay in one place for long, but from the beginning of 2000, Bengaluru became a permanent home for them. Chumbak, based in Bangalore, has 54 retail stores across India and also sells it online on various e-commerce platforms.
A year ago, Chumbak went into omnichannel mode which became a fundamental component of the business, with a partnership with big e-commerce giants Myntra and Amazon and this is helping customers to look at the products online and visit the store and buy products. The bulk of shopping is done on mobile today and through the app.
Ghazal Alagh and Varun Alagh – MamaEarth
Shark Tank India judge Ghazal Alagh founded India’s first toxin-free baby care brand, ‘Mamaearth’ a product of Honasa Consumer Pvt. Ltd in August 2016 along with her husband Varun Alagh. Mamaearth claims to make natural and safe products for parents and children. Varun Alagh is the Chief Dad and CEO of Mamaearth a direct-to-consumer (D2C) startup, while Ghazal Alagh is the Chief Mama and Chief Innovation Officer. These couples have decoded the theory of how life and a business can be successfully run together. For the financial year ending March 2021, the company had recorded a revenue of around Rs 460 crore and expected to close the ongoing financial year with at least double that revenue, as per Economic Times reports. Gurugram-based Mamaearth parent became a unicorn on January 1 after raising $52 million in a round led by existing investor Sequoia Capital.
Before becoming a Chief Mama of India’s best skincare brand Ghazal worked as a Corporate Trainer at NIIT Limited for 2 years 6 months where she trained managers and engineers from various IT companies in SQL, J2ME, and Oracle. Before starting Mamaearth, Varun worked as a senior brand manager in Coca Cola in Gurgaon from 2013 to 2016.
Not just in India, the couple has extended their business outside countries like UAE and Nepal where it received good feedback and plans to reach Bangladesh and Srilanka. Recently the brand acquired Mumbai-based BBlunt’s products and salon business from Godrej Consumer Products Limited (GCPL).
Rohan and Swati Bhargava – CashKaro
Husband-wife duo Swati and Rohan Bhargava are founders of CashKaro, a cashback, and coupon website. The couple started their relationship as friends and later not just became a life partner but also partners in business. In April 2011, Swati and Rohan started a cashbacks website in the UK with the name Pouring Pounds. The couple moved from London to Gurgaon in 2013 and brought the same business idea to India in the name of CashKaro. CashKaro is backed by investors like Tata and Kalaari Capital. CashKaro offers exclusive coupons & Cashback above discounts on over 1500+ sites across categories. Last year’s annualized GMV in non-sale months averaged around $650-750 Million for the site, which is a 3.5X jump YoY, as per PTI reports. Compared to 2020, CashKaro witnessed an 8X jump in traffic and 5X growth in sales due to the recent shift in user behaviour.
“We have scaled our performance marketing spends this year by 2X to leverage the offline to online shift in e-commerce. This year, we’ve not only seen an uptake in sales but also so much growth in the D2C space as well. In 2021 alone, we have partnered with 300+ D2C brands. We can drive more ROI for our partners compared to previous years, and that can be seen in our GMV numbers.” Swati Bhargava, Co-Founder, CashKaro told PTI.
