Your horoscope already acts as your financial planner, relationship therapist, and career coach, so why not tap your sign for beauty advice, too?
Sure, the best lipstick shade or hair color for you is whatever you feel like. But if you’re in need of inspiration in 2022 or you’re wondering why suddenly you find yourself getting elaborate nail art instead of your go-to pastel pink manicure, the answers just might be in your birth chart.
Before looking ahead, let’s (briefly) look back to 2021. The year ended with Venus in retrograde, where it stays through Jan. 29, setting the tone for 2022. “Venus is the planet of beauty,” says astrologer and InStyle.com contributor Maressa Brown. “We kick off in this retrograde in a slowed down place, as far as beauty is concerned. You’re not really supposed to switch up your look during this time because it could go awry. However, the silver lining is that the retrograde is happening during Capricorn season, an earth sign known for being pragmatic and industrious, so going back and revising something is possible.”
Other key dates to keep in mind is when Jupiter is in Pisces (Dec. 28, 2021-May 20, 2022) and in Aries (May 10-Oct. 28). “Jupiter can influence perspective and creativity, which beauty falls into,” says Brown. “During these times bigger is better and there’s luck, fortune, and abundance.”
Now, read the 2022 beauty forecast for your sign, plus the products you’ll swear by throughout the year.
Fire Signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius)
When Jupiter is in Pisces, Brown says fire signs will be focusing on their feelings rather than their typical big, bold beauty looks because their intimacy houses are effected during this time. However as soon as Jupiter moves into Aries, hot girl summer stuff is back on. According to Brown, fire signs will be “putting it all out there and getting in touch with their fiery, passionate, bigger-is-better vibe.”
Aries (March 19-April 19)
With Jupiter moving through your 12th house of spirituality in the first half of year, your usually bold, energetic sign will be keeping things low-key. Brown says this “doesn’t feel very Aries because Rams typically aren’t interested in sitting in their feelings.” During this time, you’ll find yourself gravitating towards anything that helps you recharge or recenter. Think crystal-infused skincare products or mineral bath salts, such as Naturopathica’s Sweet Birch Magnesium Bath Flakes. The exception is when Jupiter is in Aries. “Aries’ go-getter energy will be on steroids,” says Brown. “Wearing red, being competitive, and impulse-buying stuff, like going to Sephora and not thinking about their budget.” Valentino’s Rosso Valentino Refillable Lipstick in Rosso Valentino is a vibrant, matte-red shade that comes in an equally flashy red bullet with gold trim. It’s like beauty catnip for Aries.
Leo (July 23-August 22)
You’re kicking off 2022 with Venus in retrograde in your 6th house of daily routine and wellness. This will be a period of prioritizing easy-to-use products over an elaborate daily routine. “While Leos are usually about glitz and glamour, this sign will stick to the basics during this retrograde,” Brown shares. Because you’re a Leo, you’re not going to neglect your hair, which is why Bread’s nourishing, shine-boosting Hair Oil Everyday Gloss will come in handy to refresh curls and tame flyaways on straight hair. And when Jupiter arrives in Aries in the second half of the year, you’ll be out of your “deep emotional waters” and back to dramatic beauty looks, including ones you’ve never tried before. Why not swap your charcoal smoky eye for one with pops of purple, one of this year’s trending makeup shades, using Givenchy’s Le 9 De Givenchy Eyeshadow Palette in N° 04 LE 9.04.
Sagittarius (November 22-December 21)
After the chaotic, expensive holiday season, you’ll start off the year monitoring your spending, which Brown says will put an emphasis on “keeping things low-key and staying at home.” During this time, you’ll give your skin a break from the full-on glam looks you love as a fire sign. Instead, reach for multitasking skincare-makeup hybrid products like Fenty Beauty’s Eaze Drop Blurring Skin Tint, a featherweight, moisturizing tint with light-to-medium coverage that gives skin a smooth, blurred finish. And like your fellow fire signs, when Jupiter arrives in Aries in May, your whimsical and creative side will come out. Color and draw outside the lines with Byredo’s Colour Sticks in heavily-pigmented metallic and glitter shades.
Earth Signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn)
Earth signs are known to be research savvy, and Brown says Jupiter in Pisces will make Tauruses, Virgos, and Capricorns bring these skills to their friend groups in 2022. In addition to scrolling through customer reviews of products solo to gather facts, earth signs will also turn to friends, media, and beauty experts on social media for recommendations on the best products to add to your makeup, skincare, and haircare routines.
Taurus (April 20-May 20)
While Venus, the ruler of your sign, is in retrograde at the beginning of the year, take the opportunity to pick up a new skill. Spend chilly winter nights perfecting your at-home manicure and maybe even some nail art, too. The nail polish combinations are endless with Pleasing’s Perfect Pearl Nail Polish, plus the bottles with marble caps can double as decor for your vanity. With all four eclipses sitting your sign (April 30 and November 8) or partner zone (May 15 and October 25) this year, you’re going to be down to switch things up. “You’re going to be dealing with a lot of things in life, so your approach to beauty might reflect that.” No hair change is more major than going pastel pink. Try Lime Crime’s Unicorn Hair Tint in Sushi. Since semi-permanent color fades over time, you’ll be able to test the shade before making a full commitment.
Virgo (August 23-September 22)
You love gathering facts, whether it’s discovering the history of your neighborhood’s architecture or determining what product is the best for maintaining smooth and glowy skin. For the latter, you’ll DM your friend on Instagram who just dropped their current skincare routine because they’re using that one serum that’s all over your feed. Eighth Day’s The Regenerative Serum is one such product. The multitasking serum is formulated with patent-pending technology (which will appeal to your research-driven sign) and consistently sells out. Brown says you’ll want to channel fellow Virgo Beyoncé when Jupiter arrives in Aries in May. Think sexy and sultry like Bey’s “Drunk in Love” music video. It doesn’t get easier than a shimmery taupe smoky eye created with a swipe of Victoria Beckham Beauty’s Lid Lustre in Mink.
Capricorn (December 22-January 19)
The bad news? At the head of the year, Venus is in retrograde in your sign, which gives you the urge to overhaul your entire look. Before you go and get bangs or dye your hair blonde, it’s better to play it safe. As an alternative, upgrade your go-to hairstyle or try a new one like trendy big, bouncy curls using a styling brush like T3’s interchangeable AireBrush Duo. With Jupiter in Aries this spring, you’ll have a wave of nostalgia wash over you making reach for products that make you feel warm and fuzzy — like the lip gloss you swore by in the early aughts. Instead, swipe on a tinted lip oil such as Merit’s Shade Slick. It offers hydration, shine, and a hint of color without the stickiness.
Air Signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius)
Air signs will be focused on career and money this year, but even though climbing the corporate ladder is a priority, so is carving out time for yourself. Brown says air signs will consider beauty rituals as ways to take needed breaks. When Jupiter moves into Aries come spring, this sign will feel social about beauty. Not only will air signs be eager to trade tips and product recommendations with friends, they’ll also be curious about high-tech innovations in the beauty industry.
Gemini (May 21-June 20)
You’re entering 2022 in your feelings, sexy ones, to be exact. “Venus is in retrograde in your 8th house, which is all about intimate relationships,” Brown explains. “You’ll want your beauty looks to reflect your emotions.” Sensual makeup is one option, but nothing sets the vibe like a romantic rose-based scent. Boy Smells Rose Load is a floral fragrance with a spicy twist. In the second half of the year, you’ll be focused on your public image and how it impacts you professionally. Full, groomed brows is always a classic look. Use Rare Beauty’s dual-ended Brow Harmony pen to fill in and define brows.
Libra (September 23-October 22)
Your sign naturally gravitates towards all things beauty, so you might feel a bit off until the effects of Venus in retrograde wear off mid-winter. Until then, you’ll be into enhancing what you’re already working with using subtle makeup products like the flexible shades of Charlotte Tilbury’s skin-smoothing and brightening Hollywood Flawless Filter. The connection between skin health and overall wellness is going to be another theme you explore this year. While you’ll take a deep dive in what drinking enough water does for the appearance of your skin, you’re also willing to invest in products proven to help hydrate and soothe. Tatcha’s Indigo Overnight Repair has an ingredient story worth looking into. The serum in a cream is built around Japanese indigo, which was used by Samurai to heal wounds, and ceramides to support the skin barrier.
Aquarius (January 20-February 18)
Aquarians caught daydreaming? Not at all shocking. However, with Venus in retrograde in your 12th house, you’re going to lean into the stereotypes of your sign, including fleshing out all of your quirky ideas in your brand new 2022 journal. Brown says to incorporate sleep-boosting beauty products into your routine during this time. Dr. Barbara Sturm’s Night Serum is designed to minimize the inflammatory effects of stress as you sleep, while Sunday Riley’s Juno Oil tackles dryness, fine lines, and wrinkles, and will appeal to a newfound desire to spend more on self-care. When Jupiter is in Aries later in the year, you’ll be drawn to buzzy, high-tech beauty devices. Look no further than Droplette, an at-home treatment that converts active skincare ingredients (like collagen and retinol) into micro-mists that penetrate deeper into the skin than typical topical products.
Water Signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces)
Water signs will be uncharacteristically bold while Jupiter is in Pisces from Dec. 29, 2021-May 10, 2022 and again Oct. 28-Dec. 20 this year. “These signs will want to go big with their hair and brighter with their lip colors,” Brown shares. But because water signs are influenced by their emotions, you’ll channel feeling happy, optimistic, or even morose into your beauty looks.
Cancer (June 22-July 21)
Scorpio (October 23-November 21)
Your 2022 beauty vibe summed up in a few words? Playful, fun, and curious. With that in mind, you’ll get inspired by the our inner circle’s approach to beauty or the experimental ways you see color being used in the makeup looks on your feeds. Think flashes of pastels and neon with swipes of About-Face’s Matte Fluid Eye Paints or simply swapping your go-to kohl eyeliner for one of Kulfi Beauty’s jewel-toned Underlined Kajal Eyeliners. However, you’ll shift gears for the second half of the year when Jupiter winds up in Aries. During this time, you’ll be into adopting (and sticking to) a daily routine that prioritizes your overall wellbeing. Think mood-boosting herbs and crystals.
Pisces (February 19-March 20)
This year’s Venus retrograde will inspire you to network in your industry or community to make new friends. You might just be inspired to try a fuchsia lipstick after seeing it on a member of your book club. “Pisces will also look at upcoming trends and take them for a spin,” says Brown. Glitter eyeshadow, like Jones Road’s Sparkle Wash, is having a moment and plays into the dreaminess of your sign. And with Jupiter in your sign, you’ll be into etherial looks. Nothing screams “divine” like super dewy skin. Achieve an otherworldly glow with EM Cosmetics’ Sunscape Highlighter.
